The concept of Reiki is that this life force, a constant, dynamic energy that exists within the universe, can be channeled through the hands and projected onto others, as a healing modality. In the early 1900s, a Japanese man named Mikao Usui found a way to work with this healing energy, applied it to those around him with great success, which inspired him to show others who were committed to the practice. This is now known as “Usui Shiki Ryoho”.

I’ve been a skeptic for a while, I’ll be honest. Throughout my training in Oncology Massage, and working with various clients, I began to see the impact of Reiki. Even if you don’t believe in this life force concept, the profound impacts of restfulness, peace, and comfort combined with calming touch (and genuinely good intentions from the provider) show themselves very quickly: there’s no denying that even a short session of Reiki promotes a sense of wellbeing, vitality and calm. The long term effects can be significant on our physical and mental health.

I have been initiated into the First Degree of the Usui System of Reiki Healing by Roger Weston . Roger’s teachings really resonate with me: whilst singing bowls, crystals and what my cousin calls “plinky-plonky music” can all be beautiful additions to a massage, nothing compares to a Reiki session performed with little to no background music or sounds, just the placement of hands over the body at certain intervals. It’s also incredibly adaptable - it can be performed with you laying on a table or sitting in a chair, and the hand placement can be varied to ensure maximum comfort.

The session commences with a mindfulness exercise led by me, then the hand placements commence over the period of an hour. Silence is preferred, however, if you find it triggering or there’s lots of distracting environmental noise, we can play some quiet, unobtrusive music or ambient sounds. I’ll let you know when we’re done (unless you’re done earlier, and you can absolutely say so), and, yes - I’ll wake you up at the end if you’ve fallen asleep!

Personally, I’m not big on analysing the sensations experienced during energy work. Sometimes, it’s a bit cool to see coloured light, or feel intense heat, cold, tingling, etc, during your session, but this stuff is best viewed as more of a side note. It’s super fun to have a chat about, but important not to throw too much weight behind it. It is what it is.

If this floats your metaphorical boat, Reiki will be available in all aspects of Aurora Bodywork: the mobile service (children and adults), at Namami Yoga & Wellness , and the clinics I run at The Green Lifestyle Village. Book via the usual booking buttons on the respective pages (unless you’re a Green resident - send me a SMS or email to book).
